Dhobi Ghat the directorial debut of Aamir Khan’s wife Kiran Rao has hit the screens today and lot of enthusiasm in public is very much visible.

The movie’s title will leave one assuming that the Aamir Khan starrer is a story about a washer guy in Mumbai but note that the movie is not about a washer folk. Dhobi Ghat focuses on the lives of four people coming from different backgrounds.

Arun (Aamir Khan) is an isolated, brooding artist who meets Shai (Monica Dogra) an NRI investment banker and gets sexually involved with her. However, the one night stand doesnot make them fall in love with each other as Arun find a muse in Yasmin, a loner who expresses her loneliness through video recordings while Shai becomes good pal of Munna (Prateik Babbar) a dhobi, and an aspiring actor.

Kiran Rao has put that extra effort to show the actual picture of Mumbai to the world and she has done it. One can say it is the best way Mumbai has ever been described by a director. Rao has given her all the characters a special attention which can be seen on screen. She has handled this sensitive story with great care, like a baby.

In reality there are five characters in the movie that makes it a good treat to watch; Arun, Shai, Yasmin, Munna and Mumbai.

Talking about the treatment of the movie, the hand-held camera work has added authenticity to the story while the technique of the movie is more of documentary-ish type. But it has all fallen into favour of the flick.

However, there could be times when the package may look stretched out and may lead to endless yawning but one has to keep patience to make a successful landing to the climax.

Babbar has a strong screen presence in the movie while Aamir has played it safe. Monica Dogra is beautiful and looks great on screen. In future we can hope to see more of the actress. Debutant Kirti Malhotra is natural and has done justice to her character in the movie.

The background score given by Gustavo Santaoalla is outstanding and definitely leaves impression on listeners' mind.

In all a great effort put in by Rao and the movie will give her the tag of a versatile filmmaker.

Meanwhile, if you are seeking for an entertainment or romantic stimulation then switch to some other options and if one likes serious cinema then it is a must for them.
