Home Minister P. Chidambaram firmly said that Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's name did not figure in the probe into a sex scandal that had rocked the state in 2006.

"The CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) has concluded the case and his (Abdullah) name does not figure in the list of the 17 accused charge-sheeted," Chidambaram told reporters outside the ministry's North Block headquarters.

According to sources in the CBI, a status report on the investigation has been sent to the home ministry.

An emotional Abdullah resigned from office on Tuesday after the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleged his involvement in the 2006 sex scandal.

Declaring that he was guilty until proven innocent and would not get back to work till his name was cleared, Abdullah strode out of the assembly after an emotional outburst that stunned his party - and political watchers - with the suddenness with which events unfolded.

Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra had accepted the resignation of Abdullah, 39, who became the country's youngest chief minister when his National Conference came to power in alliance with the Congress in January this year, and asked him to remain in office till a successor was sworn in.
