The US-based telecommunication company AT&T has announced that it would cut down the prices of older iPhone model- 3GS to $49 from $99.

The newly announced price would come into effect from January 7 for all the iPhone 3GS models, AT&T announced. However, the prices of iPhone 3GS smartphones sold by Apple are not known. AT&T said that would be decided by Apple.

Of late, the telecom major has been shifting its focus on selling smartphones other than Apple’s iPhones. In the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the company had announced that it would add more high-speed or 4G smartphones to its portfolio clearly indicating its interest in other brands.

Besides, even the major rivals of AT&T like Verizon Wireless and Vodafone are expected to carry the expensive iPhone models in 2011, which is seen as the potential threat to AT&T.
