Without naming Pakistan, Home Minister, P. Chidambaram said on Wednesday that while India sympathised with its people for suffering from terrorism, it was also the responsibility of its rulers to deal with the scourge.

"One of the epicentres of terror is a country on our borders. That country sometimes falls victim to terror is a point we can sympathise with the people of the country, but certainly the rulers of the country will have to take responsibility (for eliminating terrorism)," Chidambaram said in the Lok Sabha while replying to the debate on India's security situation.

He said while the Bharatiya Janata Party had tried to make security an issue in the run-up to the April-May general elections, the verdict had shown that the Indian people had understood the government's intentions.

"Security is not a political issue. The members of parliament have to show single-minded sense of purpose (to fight) the different threats that India faces," Chidambaram contended.
