English actress Carey Mulligan will star opposite to DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann`s adaptation of ‘The Great Gatsby’.Buzz was that there was a tough contest for the role with Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively being other two stars being considered to play DiCaprio`s sweetheart in the flick,but Mulligan won the coveted role.
DiCaprio will play Jay Gatsby’s character while his love interest in F. Scott Fitzgerald`s masterpiece Daisy Buchanan will be now portrayed by Carey Mulligan.
A business dinner attended by Blake Lively with Luhrmann and DiCaprio in New York had sparked rumours of the ‘Gossip Girl’ beauty being roped in for the flick while insiders in Hollywood were speculating Johansson and Michelle Williams for the role.
Impressed by Mulligan’s audition, Luhrmann confirmed the role to ‘An Education’ star. Luhrmann for his choice of Buchanan’s role said,"Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world`s most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting.”
"However, specific to this particular production of `The Great Gatsby`, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her, `Hello, Daisy Buchanan’.”
