The OBC quota dispute is not far from being over. The government’s directive to central educational institutions issued on Sunday, April 20, 2008 will be challenged in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, April 22, 2008. The anti-quota group, Youth For Equality which has for long waged its battle against the OBC quota is ready to challenge the government directive.
The Youth For Equality group has asserted that the central government has gone against the directives of the Honorable Supreme Court by not complying with its order of not extending the quota system, beyond the graduation level. They also alleged that the government has not adhered to the ruling of transferring of unfilled OBC seats to the General category in their directives.
The anti-quota group, Youth For Equality had based their claims on the judgment given in the Honorable Supreme Court. Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice C K Thakker had sought the transfer of vacant quota seats to the general category. Justice Dalveer Bhandari had maintained that it is reasonable to balance reservation with other societal interests. He had emphasized in the SC ruling that it is imperative to maintain standards of excellence without compromising on quality.
