Yahoo! has closed its free web hosting service, GeoCities. Earlier it had announced the decision to close this free web hosting service. In a statement it has told that the users can go for its paid web hosting service at an introductory offer of five dollars for the first year.

In its company website, Yahoo! Said, "We have enjoyed hosting websites created by Yahoo! users all over the world, and we're proud of the community you've built."

It also said, "However, we have decided to focus on helping our customers explore and build relationships online in other ways."

This announcement came after a company report that it had made thrice the net profit despite a 12-per cent decline in revenue in the third quarter.

Yahoo! said its net profit rose from 54 million dollars to 186 million dollars with a 244 per cent increase in the said quarter. The better performance is attributed to the cost cutting measures taken by the new CEO Carol Bartz.
