China instated the world’s longest cross Sea Bridge on Thursday, May 01, 2008, connecting the commercial city of Shanghai with the port and industrial city of Ningbo. The 36 km bridge will initially be opened to traffic on a trial operations basis at midnight. The bridge is aimed to greatly boost economic integration and development in the Yangtze River Delta.
The construction of the 36 km cross Sea Bridge began in 2003 and its construction has cost 11.8 yuan ($1.69 billion). The bridge connecting Shanghai and Ningbo is expected to reduce the travel time to two-and-a-half hours from four hours. The Hangzhou Bay bridge is six lane cable stayed bridge. China which is hailed as the world’s fastest growing economy has been spending immensely on building infrastructure in the communist country. Earlier also it was China which was home to the previous record breaking 20 mile sea bridge between Shanghai and Yangshan deep water port.
