World leaders have gathered in Rome for a three day summit, seeking solutions to tackle the soaring food prices. The summit is being hosted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It is the first global response to the soaring food prices, which has led to food strikes in many parts of the world. The main topics of agenda in the summit will be raising food prices, climate change and the increasing production of biofuels.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization warn that food prices will not return to their previous low level for the anticipated future. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has indicated that agricultural activity will increase for the first few decades of the century, but will ultimately begin to fall as temperatures rise further. The three day summit, which kicks starts in Italy today, is aimed at winning donor pledges for urgent aid as short term solutions and generating long term strategies to safeguard food production.
