The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday (April 28) announced that India will host 29 matches of the 2011 World Cup cricket. While offering majority of world cup matches to India, Central Organising Committee confirmed that the 2011 World Cup secretariat will operate from Mumbai. The new decision of ICC came after dropping Pakistan as a co-host of the tournament.

The opening ceremony of the extravagant cricket event will take place in Bangladesh on February 18, 2011. The tournament will kick start in Bangladesh from February 19 and the final will be played at India. While commenting on the new move, ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat informed that out of the total 49 world cup matches, 29 will held in India across eight venues. The other host nations, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, will get 12 and 8 games respectively, added Logart.

Informing more, ICC CEO said that two of the quarterfinals will be played at Bangladesh while the other two will be held in India and Sri Lanka. The semifinals will take place in India and Sri Lanka. Earlier the ICC has snatched away the rights from Pakistan to organise world cup matches in its territory, owing to security concerns.

The ICC has assured that Sharad Pawar will continue to hold the top post of World Cup Organising Committee. Apart from it, BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty has been appointed as the Event Managing Director for 2011 World Cup and I S Bindra as the special adviser.
