The World Bank has come up with a proposal to the Indian government stating that the latter should put in a formal request for a loan to save tigers in the country. The World Bank believes that the news of Indian government’s proposal could be used to increase the visibility of the ‘Signature Tiger Event’ it is organizing in Washington on June 9. The organizers plan to rope in celebrities from the world of Hollywood and Bollywood.
The proposal from the World Bank has, however, received criticism from prominent Indian conservationist and scientists. Ullas Karanth, world’s foremost tiger scientist and Valmik Thapar, prominent tiger conservationist both have slammed the proposal demanding that the bank should first admit to the damage caused by development and wildlife conservation projects it has supported earlier. The Bank basically wants to use the ‘Signature Tiger Event’ to launch it own programme with tiger bearing countries to save the endangered animal in tandem with governments, corporates and NGO’s.
