Intel Corp, the Microprocessor leader, has entered into a deal with supercomputer manufacturer Cray Inc in order to grab a larger pie in the market share for the highest high-end computers. Cray, together with Intel, unleashed a multiple-year agreement to manufacture the next generation of high-performance computers. These computers would be competent at processing petaflops, quadrillions of machine instructions a second, and would be equivalent to double the ability of the world’s supercomputer at present.
Intel already provides a huge range of supercomputer makers, but collaborating with Cray will ensure that it is a more integral part of the world's top 10 most-powerful computers, where boasting having the fastest machines are in constant flux. Commenting on this particular aspect, Richard Dracott, general manager of Intel's High Performance Computing division remarked that Cray enjoys a unique position in the top 10 and covers the gap in the range of Intel systems. Citing from the industry data, he said that over 70 per cent of the top 500 supercomputers are Intel-based.
