The state government of Rajasthan is planning to replace the outdated WiFi zones in its capital city Jaipur with WiMax technology. Only two other cities in India, Pune and Bangalore have WiMax zones. In fact in Pune the trials for the WiMax zone have been completed and the project is now in the execution stage. The state officials in Jaipur have however revealed that it will take about another two years to implement the project in the entire city.
CK Mathew, principal secretary IT and Communications remarked that considering the advancement in technology, the state government is planning to convert the WiFi zones into WiMax zones. He further revealed that the new project is in accordance with the new IT policy and is a part of the initiative taken by the chief minister Vasundra Raje in the last budget.
WiMax will enable accessing wireless data over long distances in the city of Jaipur. WiFi on the other hand allows wireless internet connectivity within a specific enclosure. The pink city currently has WiFi zones in six places in the city and permission for setting up two more WiFi zones has recently been granted. The two new places where WiFi will be introduced are Amber fort and Jantar Mantar.
