Australian bowlers had no answer to the batting blitzkrieg by the West Indies captain Chris Gayle who treated the Aussie bowlers with disdain and contempt to make a brilliant 88 as his side beat Australia by seven wickets in their ICC World Twenty20 Group C opening match at the Oval on Saturday.

The powerful batting demonstration by the tall West Indies captain left the Australian players stunned. It was clearly Chrish Gayel's day and nothing could go wrong for him.

Chasing 170 for victory, the West Indies romped home at the loss of just three wickets with more than four overs to spare.

Only recently Gayle's West Indies were hammered in Test and One-day series by England but his 50-ball innings, featuring 6 sixes and 6 fours, reminded everyone of his brutal strokplay and also that West Indies were very much in the title hunt.

Chris Gayle shared a very good opening stand of 133 with Andre Fletcher (53). It was the third highest in all Twenty20 international matches.

The platform for West Indies victory was laid right at the start of the match when Shane Watson and Australia captain Ricky Ponting were removed for ducks in the first over by Jerome Taylor.

Match Details:

Australia: 169/7
West Indies: 172/3 in 15.5 overs
Result: West Indies beat Australia by 7 wickets
Man of the Match: Christopher Henry Gayle
Venue: Kennington Oval, London (Jun 06 , 2009)
