Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal's Welcome to Sajjanpur provides the viewer a welcome change from the usual ultra-chic flicks featuring brawny heroes and overly made-up heroines. Sajjanpur takes us to a very rural set. Instead of a very in-your-face romance and dance in up-end discotheques, one is treated to a hesitant romance depicted by a bicycle ride in the green fields and momentary meeting of the eyes.
Madhav (played by Shreyas Talpade) is the local hero not because he is drop-dead-gorgeous looking or owns a fat bank account. He is much sought-after in Sajjanpur as he is the only college graduate. Writing letters for fellow villagers, therefore, is a regular feature in the life of this wannabe novelist, who in turn also ends up controlling their lives and destinies. Welcome to Sajjanpur, with its unique rural characters and their poignant moments, makes for a fun watch.
The act of writing letters has been cleverly used to acquaint the audience with a number of social issues like widow remarriage and superstitions. But the best part about Welcome to Sajjanpur is that that it does not preach or give lessons on morality. Another praiseworthy feature is that unlike other movies, every character in this film has got his / her share of memorable lines.
