Weightlifter Monica Devi has been barred from participating in the Beijing Olympics after failing a dope test. She was the only weightlifter in the Indian contingent selected for the mega-event and was held back just hours before she was to board the flight to the Chinese capital on Tuesday, August 5.

Sources informed that Monica Devi (69 kg), who belongs from Manipur, tested positive for anabolic salt in a test conducted on June 29. As per reports, P Sailja of Andhra Pradesh had performed better than Monica during the pre-Olymic trial organized by the Indian Weightlifting Federation in July. But even then, it was Monica Devi who got selected. Devi had, however, performed better during the Asian Championship in Japan in April earlier this year.
