According to a new research presented on May 15 at the 103rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA), weight loss may actually help resolve sex problems, namely, erectile dysfunction in obese men. Pathological obesity can result in sexual problems independent of other common problems like diabetes, smoking or hypertension. The researchers from Boston and Philadelphia conducted the study and found out that sexual function was normalized in some men who underwent gastric bypass surgery for weight loss.

According to M.D Anthony Y. Smith, this study actually shows that weight loss and other risk factors which when relieved may actually be the solution to restoring the sexual functions. The result of the research gives men another very good reason to improve their health by losing weight. In this study, 95 patients who were undergoing the gastric bypass surgery for weight loss completed the Brief Sexual Inventory (BSI) pre and post operatively. It was then seen that on an average, BSI scores improved in all the various categories including sex drive, erectile function, ejaculatory function, problem assessment and sexual satisfaction.

The results of this research were later on compared to the data received from the Olmstead County Study of the Urinary Health Status Survey, which is a community based prospective study. This study is often used to study comparisons. For reducing weight, gastric bypass surgery is a good procedure which reduces the body's caloric intake, resulting in weight loss. Calorie reduction is executed by making the stomach smaller and bypassing the actual part of the stomach and small intestines. As a result, few calories are absorbed and the patient feels full faster and in the process learns to reduce the amount of food that he/ she eats.
