The Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) is planning to roll out a Weather TV channel, giving the latest weather information and analysis. The channel is likely to be launched through a public private partnership. Air Vice-Marshal Ajit Tyagi, director general of Meteorology giving more information about India’s first proposed Weather TV channel revealed that it will be finalized by the end of 2008.
The Director General of Meteorology further divulged that the channel would initially telecast programmes on weather for six hours a day and it would later be expanded to full twenty four hours. He also unfolded the modernization plans under the 11th year plan saying that an estimated Rs 900 crore will be invested in the initial first two years. An agro-meteorology service is also expected to be launched by the end of this year across India. The Air Vice-Marshal revealed that the focus of the Indian Meteorology Department during the 11th five year plan will be on communication, observation, remote sensing and dissemination of information to public.
