The winner of the highly popular Star Voice of India (VOI) singing competition Ishmeet Singh from Punjab died on Tuesday, July 29 by drowning in a swimming pool of a Maldives resort. He was visiting Maldives with fellow VOI contestants Sumitra and Vyom for a concert that was to be held on August 1, 2008.

 

The father of the 20 year old singer, Gurprinder Singh Sodhi stated from his Ludhiana home that the event management company which had taken his son to Maldives for the concert informed him about the death at 2000 hours. He also added that his son died in the swimming pool of the hotel where he was putting up.

 

An official from the said Maldives hotel stated that Ishmeet Singh, who was a second year Bachelor of Commerce student of MNC College in Mumbai, had gone to the swimming pool just for fun, but he fell into the deep end which caused his drowning.

 

An inconsolable Gurprinder Singh Sodhi told the media that he was astonished that his son had died by drowning in the pool. ‘He had never swum before us and we are not aware whether he could swim or not, said Sodhi. Amritpal Kaur, the mother of Ishmeet as well as his sister are in a state of shock following his death.
