Indian chess champion Viswanathan Anand beat the young Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in the final of the 13th Grenkeleasing Rapid World Championship held at Mainz recently. He thereby established that he is still quite capable of defending his world title later this year.

Viswanathan Anand is the world champion in classical chess and deemed as the world's best in rapid and blitz too. He propelled himself to lead by winning the first two of the four-game final. He clinched a draw in the third one which sealed the title with one game to spare. The fourth game was a just formality with a 11-move draw.

For Viswanathan Anand, who is the Brand Ambassador for NIIT, this is his 11th win at Mainz and with it, he has just bettered his personal record. The Indian chess player also plays for a local German team in Mainz and happens to be a much liked figure here. In last one decade, he has won many tournaments in this German city located alongside the banks of Rhine.
