Delhi batsman Virat Kohli has been chosen by the Indian selectors to replace injured Gautam Gambhir in the Indian squad for the ongoing Sri Lanka tri-series.
BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement, “The All India Selection Committee has decided to send Virat Kohli as the replacement batsman to Sri Lanka for the tri-series.”
"Kohli will join the team at the earliest," he added.
Kohli’s name was suggested after Gambhir was ruled out of the event a day before India plays its first match against New Zealand. Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik are expected to take up the responsibility of opening the innings in absence of Sehwag and Gambhir.
A clean sweep in the tournament would make India number one ODI team in the world. India’s coach Gary Kirsten has already drawn up a road map for the team.
Kirsten said,"We have set our targets as to what we have to achieve in the next eight months. Certainly, one of them is to become the best team in the world. We are heading that way and we are very excited on the way that we have gone about our business to get to that position.”
"We know that if we continue with as hard as we do in terms of our training and how we set our sights for games, we have the best chances of reaching there", he said.
