The Central party leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party has finalized the name of Vijay Kumar Malhotra as the candidate for the upcoming assembly election in Delhi on September 26, 2008. This decision was taken at a meeting of the Parliamentary Board at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. The 77-year-old veteran is the party’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha.

According to BJP General Secretary, Arun Jaitley, Mr Malhotra being a senior and most acceptable leader would be able lead the party in the upcoming assembly election and emerge victorious. Sources said that the name of Arun Jaitley was earlier thought for chief ministerial candidate's post in the assembly election. But since he was not inclined towards the offer, the idea was rejected. Instead, he preferred to keep his place in the party's Central leadership.

The party's decision to opt for Malhotra came when it could not decide between Union minister Vijay Goel and Delhi party chief Harsh Vardhan for the candidature post of chief minister.  The party’s Parliamentary Board meeting was chaired by President Rajnath Singh where the general secretary Arun Jaitley declared the name of Malhotra.
