According to Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, a panel of distinguished members which will be headed by a prominent personality, like a Noble laureate, will be selecting the vice chancellors of the Universities in India. He added that the central and state governments will not play any role in the selection procedure.
Kapil Sibal, while addressing the media, said: "The collegiums will consist of 30 to 40 people headed by an eminent personality, let’s say a Nobel laureate. They will decide whom to appoint."
"The government will not interfere in it," Sibal said. He was addressing the 56th meeting of the Central Advisory Board on Education.
He said: "The biggest thing that emerged (from the meeting) was the appointment of vice-chancellors. All the states supported this move."
Normally a search committee is appointed by the government, which identifies and recommends the names of persons who may then be chosen as the vice chancellor.
