Venus Williams was out of China Open after she lost to Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Monday. The Russian crushed the world number three by 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the USD 6.6 million tournament.
The world number 39, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova controlled the last two sets of the 132-minute contest to claim her second win over the seven-times grand slam winner.
In the men’s singles, Novak Djokovic became the first seed to reach the men's second round .He registered a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Victor Hanescu.
Djokovic won the first set quite comfortably. A fizzing crosscourt winner for his fifth break of the match finally sealed Djokovic's place in the last 16.
The 22-year-old Djokovic said, “That’s the first round, you have to get used to the ups and downs.”He was playing his first match since his US Open semi-final defeat to Roger Federer.
"I am aware I need to raise my level of performance to get far in the tournament. I'll have a rest tomorrow ... I'm still a bit jet-lagged, I think you could see that in the second set."
In other women's matches, Russian Alisa Kleybanova defeated Belgian teenager Yanina Wickmayer by 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
