Renowned cardiac surgeon of India P Venugopal has been reinstated as the director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday, May 08, 2008. The honorable Supreme Court also in its ruling stroked down the act that limits the tenure of the office of the Director. The Supreme Court in its verdict asserted that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and the Post Graduate Institute for Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh (Amendment) Act, 2007 was ‘malafide and unconstitutional’.
Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss after the verdict remarked that it is not a setback to him and nor does he intend to resign on the issue. The minister further added that he would comment on the verdict only after getting a copy of the judgment and studying its details. P Venugopal had challenged the Amendment to the AIIMS Act, which fixed the upper age of retirement of director at 65 years, a step that made the eminent cardiac surgeon to relinquish office.
