Use of Steel in India Up by 5% In Q1

The use of steel in India rose by 5.2% to 12.83 million tonnes in the first quarter of this fiscal from 12.2 million tonnes in the same period during 2008. This can be considered as a sign of economic recovery.
 
The steel production has increased by 3.4% to 13.98 million tonnes during Arpil-May 2009, compared to 13.53 million tonnes in the same period during 2008-09.
 
The Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) saw an increase in the production by 3.73% to 3.06 million tonnes during April-June, compared to 2.95 million tonnes in the same period during 2008-09.
 
Another nationalized unit, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), also saw a rise in production by 2.09% to 685,000 tonnes from 671,000 tonnes.
 
But the exports have declined from 1.032 million tonnes to 0.642 million tonnes, a fall by 37.8%, while imports slipped by 5.3% to 1.41 million tonnes from 1.49 million tonnes.
