Even though World No. 1, Roger Federer could not take over the former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in the first set of the third round of US Open 2009, the five-times US Open defending champion was able to reserve his berth in the fourth round of the US Open.
Federer was able to gain control over the match only in the 11th game of the third set after Hewitt’s serve was broken by the World No. 1. The Swiss player
The world No. 1 and five-time defending champion had committed 59 unforced errors and converted just 54% of his first serves. But Federer found another gear when had required it and took over the Hewitt by a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
Federer has now won 14 straight matches against Hewitt, the 2001 US Open champion and former world No. 1 who had a tough time due to his hip surgery. Hewitt’s last win over Federer came back in 2003 in Davis Cup with their all-time record now standing at 16-8 in Federer’s favor.
In the last 16, Federer will either face American James Blake or Spanish 14th seed Tommy Robredo, whose match is in progress.
