The Human Rights Watch on Friday, June 06, 2008 revealed that the United States is the leading country in the world that has maximum number of people behind bars. According to HRW, the United States has more than 2.3 million people behind bars, more than any other country in the world and more than ever before in the history of the country.
The newly released figures by Justice Department also show a sharp racial imbalance in the US prisons, with the blacks outnumbering the whites six to one. According to the Justice Department figures, about 11 percent of black men aged 30 to 34 are in US prisons. The incarceration figures revealed a rate of 762 per 100,000 residents in the US, compared to 152 per 100,000 in Britain, 108 in Canada and 91 in France.
David Fahti, HRW’s US programme director remarked that the new incarceration figures confirm the United States as the World’s leading jailer. He further remarked that the Americans should retrospect as to why they jail so many more people than Canada, Britain or other democracies of the world.
