California based Amyris Biotechnologies has mastered the art of developing renewable fuel from sugarcanes. The US biotech company, in collaboration with Brazilian ethanol producers, is planning a joint venture to turn sugarcane into diesel fuel. John Melo, Amyris chief executive revealed that the new renewable fuel is similar to fossil fuel diesel and could be blended with traditional diesel.
John Melo revealed that the company considers, Brazil as a foundation after which it will plan similar operations in Central America and India. The largest Latin American nation, Brazil which uses large number of trucks for transporting goods, used 45 billion liters of diesel last year, and the consumption is expected to rise to 80 billion liters by 2020. Up to 50-80 percent of the new fuel can be mixed with the traditional diesel in the trucks, John Melo revealed. Amyris is partner of 70 percent in the new Brazilian venture.
