The US and EU, which resumed their talks on climate change, mentioned that they were committed towards reinforcing the authority and integrity of NPT. They have also urged the nations who have not signed the NPT to sign the same.
"We are committed to preserving and strengthening the authority and integrity of the NPT," said a joint declaration issued after the US-EU 2009 Summit which came to an end on Tuesday.
The nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), based on its three mutually reinforcing pillars of non-proliferation, disarmament and peaceful uses of nuclear energy, represents a unique and irreplaceable framework for maintaining and strengthening international peace, security and stability.
They have urged all the non-signatory nations, including India, to become states free of nuclear arms.
India has refused to sign the NPT, maintaining that the treaty is discriminatory in nature.
The statement, which also supported the endorsing of Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, mentioned that immediate start of negotiations on a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT) should be kicked off.
