India Watch
A Parliamentary Committee has suggested that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) should seriously think of conducting its examinations on the same format as that of GMAT, IIT and IIM entrance examinations. This, according to the committee will help reduce the extraordinarily long wastage of time between the actual advertising for the various vacancies and the declaration of the results.

Various competitive examinations in the country like the Civil Services Examinations, Indian Forest Service Examinations, Indian Engineering Services examinations and Defense Services Examinations are held by the UPSC annually. The committee feels that this will prevent the wastage of valuable resources and time. This, in turn, will ensure greater transparency and will transfuse greater confidence among the students.

The Parliamentary Committee also feels that even the State Public Service Commissions need to tighten up their procedure and should develop a strong mechanism so that the whole procedure is transparent and functions independently and efficiently. It was also felt that the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT) should be given more powers which acts as the central resource of the administration of all the ministries and departments in the country. It was suggested that the secretary of the DOPT must be given the power to get replies from all the secretaries immediately, and should be dealt with like a cabinet secretary level official.
