The UN Security Council is expected to impose sanctions against North Korea with immediate effect following latter's nuclear test. The members of the UN Security Council unanimously condemned the testing of a nuclear device by North Korea and said that it is a serious violation of a previous resolution passed in 2006. The communist state on Monday (May 25) announced that it has successfully conducted an underground nuclear test with a view to enhance its defence capabilities in a hostile world.
Condemning the new move by North Korea, US Ambassador to United Nations Susan Rice said that Council members are resolved to come up with strong resolution having stern measures. She added that Washington finds North Korea's nuclear test as a serious violation of international laws and threat to regional and international security. As a result of which, US will want UN to introduce a strong resolution with stronger measures. When asked about imposing further sanctions on North Korea, Susan Rice said that Washington is in favour of sanctions. She informed that all the 15 members of UN Security Council stood unanimously to condemn Pyongyang's nuclear test.
Japanese ambassador to UN, Yukio Takasu stated that North Korea's new move is a direct threat to his nation as well as to international community. He added that Japan is also in favour of imposition of sanctions on North Korea. Apart from Japan, France and Britain have also supported the imposition of more sanctions on the communist state.
France's Deputy Ambassador Jean-Pierre Lacroix stated that Pyongyang will have to pay heavy price for breaching UN resolutions. He said that his country will seek more sanction on North Korea. The members of UN Security Council will meet on Tuesday (May 26) at UN headquarters in New York for a new draft resolution with the sanctions.
