The Kalka-Shimla toy train, which was introduced during the British era, has been included into the UNESCO world heritage list. It was in September previous year when a two-member team from the UN body had come to Himachal Pradesh to review the Kalka-Shimla toy train. They mentioned in their report that the Kalka-Shimla toy train route is ‘an engineering marvel of the British era that is still alive with its old charm.’ The Indian government had declared the rail route a heritage site in July 2000 when Mamata Banerjee was the railway minister.
But the conferring of the UNESCO title to this 104-year old toy train is definitely a greater honor that should translate into boosting tourism in the region. The Kalka-Shimla toy train is the fourth rail route that has been included in the UNESCO list. The other three that feature in the UNESCO heritage list includes the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway,
