UN General Assembly will hold a debate on the issue of Serbia's plea for an opinion on Kosovo's independence from ICJ (International Court of Justice). Factually, the issue of Kosovo has been volatile one, and ethnic Albanian-majority of Kosovo is an UN-run province of Serbia since 1999. The state unilaterally had declared independence from Belgrade on February 17 1999.
Kosovo which has been surviving with support of US and NATO, according to Serbia, was unlawfully taken away by NATO forces and its independence is illegal. The secession of the Kosovo according to Serbia is breach of territorial integrity of it. To seek legal remedy Serbia has appealed for an advisory opinion from (ICJ). Now, Serbia wants a legal opinion from ICJ on the issue whether independence of Serbia is legal or not.
ICJ decides disputes arising between and among sovereign nations. It needs recommendation from UN General Assembly for any dispute which has to be entertained by it. Accordingly, the case of Serbia has to be discussed before General Assembly. Enrique Yeves, the spokesman for the General Assembly President, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann of Nicaragua said that there has been approval of the recommendation from its General Committee and the issue has been put on the agenda of 63rd session of General Assembly.
