The UN Security Council has elected five nations of Austria, Japan, Mexico, Uganda and Turkey as its new non-permanent members on October 17, 2008. In secret ballot of all 192 members of the UN General Assembly, Japan came out victorious by beating Iran 158-32 to get the seat for Asia Group. Japan replaces Indonesia to serve a two-year term in the Council, while Austria and Turkey replace Belgium and Italy.
 
On the other hand, South Africa and Panama are replaced by Uganda and Mexico as the new non-permanent members of UN Security Council. Speaking on occasion, Japanese Ambassador Yukio Takasu said the Japan pledges to play an active and constructive role in the Security Council. The Asian country will give out all its efforts to contribute to peace-building and peacekeeping, he added.
 
According to Austrian foreign minister Ursula Plassnik, it is a matter of respect and honor to be included in UN Security Council. The foreign minister of Turkey assured to contribute for resolving the ongoing global crisis. All the representatives of newly elected member nations have promised to play their respective roles with utmost commitment.
