UN Relief coordinator, John Holmes visited the cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar on Monday, May 19, 2008. The United Nations’ top aid official got a first hand look at the disaster affected Myanmar. John Holmes handed over a letter to the isolationist junta from UN secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The United Nations has revealed that 2.4 million people are still critically short of aid after more than two weeks after the cyclone hit Myanmar.
A UN spokesperson in Myanmar has revealed that Holmes visited the cyclone hit regions of Myanmar in the morning, but did not divulge any further details about his trip. The United Nations has revealed that only a fraction of emergency supplies is reaching the people of Irrawaddy delta, where thousand of people were swept away on the May 2-3 cyclone.
Many hungry villagers are now migrating from to other villages in search of food. Myanmar has also been delaying the granting of visas to dozens of disaster relief specialists. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is also expected to visit Myanmar within this weekend.
