United Nations Secretary General Ban ki Moon is expected to come down to Sir Lanka to assess the humanitarian situation after the island nation got rid of LTTE terrorism. According to Lankan foreign minister, Rohitha Bogollagama, the UN chief will come on Friday (May 22). Ban ki Moon is likely to hold meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and will also visit the refugee camps. As per an estimate, about 250,000 civilians fled the Tamil rebel controlled areas in the north of the island nation.
The Sri Lankan government has assured to resettle the civilians in their original villages, which are currently under military control. UN chief's visit will be the first one from any senior foreign dignitary since the country was liberated from LTTE terrorism. The Lankan military forces have defeated the rebel outfit and killed its chief Velupillai Prabhakaran while he was trying to flee from war zone in country's north.
Apart from Prabhakaran, the military forces have killed several top leaders of LTTE thereby ending the three-decade long ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. The armed movement has claimed nearly 70,000 lives besides destroying peace and prosperity in the island nation. At the moment, it is important to focus on the condition of the displaced civilians in camps and reception centers. Although the relief material is being provided but the camps are still not up to international standards.
