With a view to uphold people's rights to housing, food, water and sanitation, the human-rights committee of UN General Assembly has adopted a protocol. The UN protocol will also hold the government responsible if it fails to meet such essentials. This optional protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights was adopted by the third committee of UN. The additional protocol was adopted without a vote. Praising the new decision of UN, Amnesty International stated that the protocol will help the people of all the countries to get justice through UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

According to UN human-rights committee, in most of the countries people are not able to make any complaints when their basic rights are violated. They lack the power and ability to hold those responsible for the violation of their rights. The newly adopted UN protocol will secure the essential rights of the people besides providing the power to fight injustice. The optional protocol is likely to go for a final vote by the 192-nation General Assembly on December 10. The newly adopted protocol is a part of UN declaration which was adopted 15 years ago in Vienna. That UN declaration stated that 'all human rights are universal, indivisible and interdependent and interrelated'.
