The Great Britain is set to open its first fully state-funded Hindu school from the month of September this year. The Bhoomi pujan, traditional foundation laying ceremony was held recently amid beating of drums and chanting of Vedic hymns, to mark the beginning of its construction. The school named Krishna-Avanti primary school will open in Harrow, which has the maximum concentration of Hindus of any borough in the United Kingdom.
The school will initially admit 30 pupils, who will have dedicated Yoga and Sanskrit lessons and will grow vegetables, in line with the strict vegetarian principles of the school. Naina Parmar, the school’s head teacher said that they aim to create an effective, calm and happy learning environment, where the mission and vision statements are lived by combining the wisdom of Vedic teachings and exemplary professional practice. The school is being built at a cost of 10 million pounds by the I Foundation, a leading Hindu charity organization. The school is working in affiliation with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) as the official faith advisor. The Department of Education and Skills had announced the building of the Hindu faith school in November 2005.
