The rebel group of Uganda, Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has finally decided to sign an agreement which is expected to put an end to the two-decade long civil war in the north part of the country. The peace treaty is supposed to be inked on November 30. The confirmation of this news was given by the Ugandan Army spokesman Major Paddy Ankunda. The civil war in Uganda has distorted the economic, political and social condition of the country. Over the last few decades, war in Uganda has killed thousands of people besides displacing almost two million civilians.
In 2006, the southern Sudanese government took the initiative to resolve the matter through proper talks and discussions. The Ugandan rebels also put their demand for entering the peace treaty. According to them, the International Criminal Court (ICC) will have to withdraw the arrest warrants on the leaders of LRA after which it will consider the peace agreement. The court issued warrants for five LRA leaders in 2005. At the recent meeting of the representatives of both government and the rebel group along with UN envoy, all the concerned parties reached a consensus to seal the peace agreement on November 30, this year.
