While the Bisleri and Tatas are busy tussling over the infringement of the ‘Himalayan’ trademark, the United Breweries group headed by Vijay Mallya has marched ahead into the domain to launch its Kingfisher Himalaya Natural Mineral Water. The UB Group has reportedly registered this name as its trademark and is readying to introduce its very own natural mineral water fetched from the Himalayas.

‘We intend launching our natural mineral water in the next few months and as long as it is sourced from the Himalayas we will be using the word Himalaya for our brand,’ a senior officer from the UB Group said. Sources infact reveal that water is going to become a crucial business for the UB group in the near future so much so that it may create a completely new company to especially handle this project.

The Bisleri International, on the other hand, is in talks with the Intellectual Property Appellate Board in Chennai for rectification of the ‘Himalayan’ trademark. Mr Ramesh Chauhan, Chairman, Bisleri International explained that his company is challenging the use of the word ‘Himalaya’ as it is descriptive in nature and hence indicative of the quality and nature of water derived from a specific region. Mr Chauhan added that if they win the case, then Himalaya will cease to be a trademark and will be treated as just a word that can also be used by other companies engaged in the water business.
