Punishing Iranian defiance to international nuke norms, UN Security Council has reaffirmed sanctions imposed on Iran. The U.N. Security Council passed the resolution unanimously and reaffirmed three previous rounds of sanctions on Iran for refusing to halt its uranium enrichment program. On the other hand, Iran has called the sanctions "futile and ineffective."
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in his speech in UN General Assembly said that Iran's nuclear activities are peaceful. However, no country was willing to accept Iranian side. After the passing of the sanction resolution, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said that the measure was designed to send the message 'that our resolve has not weakened on this issue.'
The reaching on to common understanding of sanctions shows a compromising situation among Security Council members. Earlier, Russia and China had opposed the expanding of the sanctions but later on they both accepted the resolution. Under the current sanction regime there would be economic measures and arms embargoes against Iran.
