A new study done on the episodes of obstructive sleep apnoea which happen during the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) proved that they share a relation with type 2 Diabetes.

According to Kamran Mahmood, MD, MPH of Illinois University at Chicago and who was the key investigator in this study, Type 2 Diabetes and OSA due to REM are associated in a very significant manner.

According to him, REM related OSA is an early indicator of OSA in patients as well as women who are below the age of 55.  He also mentioned that OSA which happens in REM sleep is worse than non REM sleep. He said that the reason behind this condition is the impairment of the skeletal muscles located in the upper airway as well as ventilation due to neurological mediation. He also stated that this can be major reason for an association being seeing between REM-related OSA and Type 2 Diabetes.

According to the study, the presence of Type 2 diabetes in people suffering from OSA is about 30% and in people who do not have diabetes is about 18.6%.  The participants of this study who fell into the middle age group and had OSA had an odd for Type 2 diabetes, which was almost 2.8 times than younger participants as well as those who did not have OSA.

This study relating Type 2 Diabetes and REM-related OSA has been published on the 15th of June, 2009 in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
