Co-host Switzerland’s chances of advancing in Euro Cup 2008 were thwarted by Turkey on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 as the latter defeated Switzerland by 2-1. Turkey can now join Group A leaders Portugal in the quarterfinals after defeating Czech Republic in the final match. Turkey coach Fatih Terim remarked that their win over Switzerland has given a lot of confidence to them and from this win onwards it is the beginning of Euro 2008 for them.

It was a goal from Arda Turan, scored in injury time that gave Turkey a 2-1 win over Switzerland and eliminated the co-hosts from the European championship. After Hakan Yakin gave Switzerland the lead in the 32nd minute, Turkey’s substitute Semith Senturk scored the equalizer in the 57th. The Wednesday match between Switzerland and Turkey was sufficient to send Portugal to the quarterfinals from Group A. The Turks and Czechs will now play for the final spot from the group on Sunday.
