The apex body of the transporters said on Tuesday, July 1 that truckers all over India will go on an indefinite strike from midnight onwards to stress their demand for the termination of toll tax as well as rationalization of duty of diesel. Charan Singh Lohara, the president of All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), stated that all transporters will down their shutters and that there will be no movement of goods unless the government addresses their demands. The AIMTC further underscored that it holds the support of all state transporters' association with a collective fleet size of 48,00,000 trucks.

The members of the AIMTC on Tuesday put forward a list of their demands before Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh as well as before the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi. The AIMTC list demands the annulment of ad valorem taxes charged on diesel. It further says that the toll taxes on those old highways should be done away with, where recoveries have already been made. At the same time, the AIMTC has demanded that the toll taxes also be withdrawn from those roads built under the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) model where the private parties have already made recoveries. Another demand is for the abolition of speed governors of 60 km on the highways.
