Come March 2009 and the Toshiba Corporation will scrap its mobile digital satellite broadcasting services. It is Mobile Broadcasting Corp., the subsidiary of the Toshiba Corporation, which has been providing the broadcasting services for specialized mobile equipment since 2004.
Officials inform that the paid mobile digital satellite broadcasting services of the Toshiba Corporation could not entice sufficient subscribers because of the increasing demand for free broadcasting services, which target mobile phones.
A statement issued by Toshiba in this regard explained that ‘the number of subscribers had not reached a sufficient level to sustain operations.’ It also underscored that Toshiba had reached the decision to annul broadcasting only after an incisive review of operations.
The scrapping of the mobile digital satellite broadcasting services is expected to slap on the company an expenditure of around 25 billion yen ($232.9 million) for the year ending next March. The company will provide assistance to its unit to soften the blow on clients and business associates.
