New Zealand’s Tom Ashley bags a gold for himself in the Men's RS:X (Windsurfer) with 52 overall points, while Shahar Zubari wins bronze medal which also comes as the first medal for Israel. Though just a day prior to his winning moment, Ashley was unlucky as he finished 32nd. He finished the medal race third behind Chan King-yin of Hong Kong and Zubari. But he bounced back to the forefront leading his way to the victory position.
It was the third New Zealand gold medal of the Beijing Games and the ninth overall at the tournament and the first sailing gold since 1992, when board sailor Barbara Kendall won off Barcelona. On the other end, Shahar Zubari who loved to sail in the light shifty airs had his share of luck. His was a lucky day with the conditions being just perfect for him to swiftly sail past other to bag a bronze for himself and the first medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics for Israel.
