US president Barack Obama has nominated former Democratic congressman Timothy Roemer as his new envoy to India. The 52-year-old distinguished scholar has worked in the blue-ribbon commission which investigated the 9/11 terror attacks on US. He also served on a key committee meant for preventing nuclear proliferation.  Apart from naming US envoy to India, Obama also nominated ambassadors to Sri Lanka and Japan.

US president said that the ambassadors will consolidate his country's partnership with the Asian nations especially at this critical time. The ambassadorial positions still await the confirmation from US Senate. Before becoming the president of a national security think tank, Centre for National Policy (CNP), Timothy Roemer offered his service in the US House of Representatives from 1991-2003. In US House of Representatives, Roemer served on the intelligence, education and workforce, and science committees.

Besides holding high-end posts, Timothy Roemer is a distinguished scholar at the Mercatus Centre at George Mason University. Currently, he serves on the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism. Apart from these, Roemer works in the Washington Institute for Near East Policy’s Presidential Task force on Combating the Ideology of Radical Extremism and the National Parks Second Century Commission.

Timothy Roemer was born in South Bend, Indiana and completed his graduation from the University of California with a BA degree in 1979. He earned his MA and PhD from the University of Notre Dame. Apart from Roemer, Obama named Patricia Butenis as US ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives while longtime technology-focused lawyer John Roos as ambassador to Japan.
