Tiger Woods fighting a sporadic knee pain won his 14th major title in playoff for the US Open on Monday, June 16, 2008. The world no 1 sealed his third US Open victory with a two putt par at the seventh, where his birdie attempt from 25 feet fell inches short. Throughout the tournament, Woods had been nursing a painful left knee after having arthroscopic surgery two months ago.
Fellow American Rocco Mediate in the tournament had been bidding to become the oldest US Open champion at 45. None the less, he was happy for Woods’ recovery after trailing by three shots with eight playoff holes remaining. Woods after the tournament remarked he would have loved to win but still it was a great day. The world no 1 clearly appeared to have the 18-hole playoff in his grasp after forging two strokes up at the turn. Woods has previously won the coveted golf title in 2000 and 2002.
