The radical Tibetan exiles in India have decided to convene their own mock Olympics in the northern part of the country on Thursday, about three months before the real event will be convened in China’s capital, Beijing. The mock Olympics will comprise of just few sport events like swimming, archery and shooting, but is proving to be a cause of humiliation for host country India and frustration for the more moderate Tibetan administration in exile headed by the Dalai Lama.
The justification put forward by those organizing the mock Olympics in India is that they want to keep Tibet is the international new headlines. Dolma Chondhup, a Tibetan rights activist says that the aim of holding the mock Olympics is not to sabotage the real event. He states that the idea is to underscore that a world event is being organized nearby a zone where ferocious oppression of people is taking place.
Unrest cropped its ugly head in the China-controlled Tibet in March this year. The Tibetan government-in-exile says since then 203 Tibetans have been killed and another 1000 injured in a crackdown by Beijing. China on the other hand says that ‘rioters’ and ‘insurgents’ killed 21 people and has also held the Dalai Lama responsible for this chaos. The Tibetan spiritual leader has rejected this claim.
